On Wednesday 12 February 2020, at 14.00 hours, Sookprapruet Building, Professor Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, President of the Senate, together with Mr. Supachai Somcharoen, Second Vice-President of the Senate, and Mr. Nut Phasuk, Secretary-General of the Senate, welcomed H.E. Mrs. Samantha K. Jayasuriya, Ambassador of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to Thailand on the occasion of her assumption of duty.
 

During the conversation, both the President of the Senate and the Ambassador of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka praised the cordial relations between Thailand and Sri Lanka since the establishment of diplomatic relations 65 years ago. Besides, both countries have had close ties through the introduction of Buddhism which could be traced back over 800 years ago. For the parliamentary relations, the Thai parliament emphasizes in strengthening the relationship and expanding mutual cooperation as both sides have established Parliamentarians’ Friendship Groups. In the economic relations, Sri Lanka is Thailand’s fourth-largest trading partner in South Asia. Both countries signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Strategic Economic Partnership which also promotes cooperation in areas such as tourism, society and culture. On this occasion, the Ambassador also expressed her appreciation to the President of the Senate for the warm welcome and affirmed to support the parliamentary relations between Thailand and Sri Lanka.
